ORDERED TO KEEP PEACE

, JTor twelve months Kukutai Tamaki, a Maori, will be bound by a bond of £50 to be of good; behaviour. He was ordered to enter into the bond at the Magistrate's Court this morning by Mr. E. Page, S.M., after his Worship had heard the facts in support of a charge against Tamaki of having assaulted his mother-in-law, Miriama Rangi Kauhoe, at Plimmerton.

It was stated by Mr. D. Morison, counsel for the complainant, that on the evening of Bth February, Tamaki came home drunk, and his wife tried to put him out of the house. Miriama Kauhoe, in attempting to get the children out of the way, was struck on the mouth by the defendant, and her hair was also pulled. Finally, with the assistance of a neighbour, Tamaki was shut outside the house. An interpreter said that Tamaki wished to say that his mother-in-law had told him to get put of the house. What the summons said was true, but he hit the complainant with his open hand. Mr. Morieton said tha*, Tamaki's wife had been unable to obtain sufficient money from the defendant, and he understood she was taking maintenance proceedings. The mother-in-law told him that_ since the assault she had suffered pains in the head. She had lost a tooth, and some of her hair had been pulled out. In addition to entering into the bond to keep the peace, Tamaki wa3 ordered to-pay costs, £3 12s 6d. He was allowed two weeks to pay the money, ■
