AUSTRALIA NOT DOWN AND OUT
LONDON, 19th February. The financial correspondent of th© "Daily Telegraph" says that Australian loans have recently been under a cloud; but public sentiment has been favourably influenced by the assertion of Sir Robert Gibson that those who purchased Australian securities to-day-will have reason to congratulate themselves in the future. . . . ■'
Inquiries in tho city show little disposition to sell Australian securities. Large holders are "sitting, tight." It is somewhat difficult to obtain shortdated loans in any quantity.
There are no misgivings concerning' the ability of the States to meet obligations maturing in the next few years.
The "Daily Telegraph" goes on to detail that Australian securities are likely to appeal to those looking out for a reasonably assured capital appreciation, which will not be liable for income tax.
