THE PRESS ASSOCIATION

The annual meeting of the shareholders of the United Press Association was held this afternoon.

Members present were Messrs. A. G. ■ Henderson, chairmau .. ("Christehurclx Times"), L. lilundell ("Evening tost"), f H. Horton ("New Zealand Herald"), C. Stanley Smith (Duncdiu "Star"), T. C. List (''Taranaki' News"), E. Abbey-Jones ("Southland News"), E. G. Ken- (Timaru "Herald"), 11. B. Bell (Timaru "Post"), 11. W. Crawford (Whaugarei "Advocate"), T. N. Geddis (Napier . "Telegraph"), R. P. Furriess ("Marlborough, Express"), A. L. Muir (Gisborne "Herald"), A. A. Lucas (Nelson "Mail"), W. Easton ("Otago Daily Times"), J. Coombe ("Manawatu Standard"), F. A. Clarke (Auckland "Star"), A. M. Burna (Christchurch-"Press"), E. C. Huie ("Sun" Newspapers), C. W. Earle ("The Dominion"), T. Williams (Westport "Times"), W. Atkin (Westuort "News"), W. C. Weston ("Taranaki Herald"),. P. Bond (Hawera '"Star")., , The following also attended by permission of the meeting: Messrs. P. Selig (Christchurch), G. Codlin ("New Zealand Herald"),. W.F. Bissett ("Southland Times"), A. Allport (Timaru "Herald"), C. H. Hewlett (Christchurch "Times"), John Montgomery (Christchurch "Press"), and E. A. Blundell ("Evening Post"). . The annual report contained a tribute to the memory of the late Sir George .Fenwick, who was the last survivor* of ■ the founders' of the association, of Messrs. Kilgour. and W. H. Smith, old- members of long standing, and Messrs. : Mitchell "* and N. Burton, old agents, of the. association. An extraordinary meeting -was then !j eld, at which a number of amendments -to^ the articles of the association were pa&f.d.

At a meeting of directors later,, Mr. K. Abbey Jones was elected chairman for the ensuing' year. ■ Mr. A. G. Hen'dersoa! tendered his resignation, and Mr. .A.' M. Burns, of the Christchurch "Press,"l was appointed to the vacancy thus erea-fed. . In the Municipal Chambers to-riighjfc the Mayor (Mr. W. Angland) extended: ai welcome on behalf of the citizens to I the visiting pressmen. He congratulate^ the members of the Press Association onj having met to celebrate the jubilee • ci: the association, ■ which was formed in TBJiaru, arid paid a tribute to the great worlc done by the late Sir George Fenwick. He |stated that the progress of the association (would ever be a monument to him,. anjjl also stressed the great part newspapers flayed in the welfare of the country generally.

Mr. C. W. Earle, C.M.G., president of the Newspaper Proprietors' Assod iation, acknowledged the welcome and expressed regret that Sir George Fen wick biid not been spared to attend the jubilee. .'

Members will leave for the- Hoajmitage, Mount Cook, to-morrow, where /the remaining meetings will be held. >
