AUCKLAND, This Day.
A brutal assault on a girl is reported to have occurred near Bazorback Hill, Bombay, about 4.30 on Wednesday afternoon. , . ' The girl;,who is aged about 16, was returning from school in Pukekohe, and, having left a bus at Bombay, she was walking along the Eazorbaek road. A young man stopped her at the roadside, telling her that a woman wished to see her in a shed about 300 yards from the road. Having no suspicions; since she knew the woman well, the girl accompanied the man down a'^ane.
As soon as they were out of sight of the road the man, it is alleged, turned on the girl, catching her by the throat and throwing her to the ground. He then threatened to cut her throat with ft razor. The girl fought violently and screamed, but was badly cut about the face, hands, and neck. The police are of opinion, that the girl received her injuries by being pushed on to a barbed-wire. fence during the struggle. The assailant escaped. The victim of the assault is suffering from shock and cuts on the hands and chest.
The police searched all night and day. Late yesterday afternoon they arrested Sydney John Vernon, aged 18, a farm employee, and charged him with assault.
