THE OUTDOOR CULT

Bad housing conditions in Germany are said to explain in part the great change manifesting itself in /Central Europe in the universal desire for light, fresh air, and fresh water. Every, child of schoolgoing age and every second able-bodied adult belongs to some wander or sports club. Sundays and holidays see all the youth of Germany on long walking tours, each group with its camping outfit, guitar or mandolin. Eleven thousand children's hostels exist in Germany, where ysathful holidaymakers find very cheap good accommodation anff food. After long tramps, games, popular songs and recitals, folk lore and national dances provide enjoyable pastime. A large number of these hostels have been built in picturesque spots, with pood panoramic views. They include not a few old castles, brimful of tradition, and .surrounded by an atmosphere of romance and adventure.
