POLITICAL MURDERS
OUTRAGE IN SHANGHAI
FOREIGN CONCESSION INVADED
SHANGHAI, 19th 1-ebruary.
(Received 20th February, 3 p.m.)
After twelve years' freedom from political assassinations, Shanghai was astonished this morning to discover what apparently foreshadows a resuscitation of the murder campaign. Last night seven annad Chinese entered a bouse in the French Concession, and shot dead two Chinese members of the left wing of the Kuomintang. Two others are expected to die. The householder, a Leftist also, owes his life to the fact that he was absent. The gang knocked at tl^e door,' immediately sjhot the house boy who opened it, rushed upstairs, entered a room in which four Chinese wero sitting, opened fire, hitting all, and left immediately. In the street they encountered a passer-by, whom they regarded as possibly a dangerous identity witness, and so shot him. They then escaped.
The police believe Nanking is responsible for hiring professional assassins. The dead men were Wong Loh-Ping and Pan Teh-Chien, both prominent, in Kuomintaug circles, the former being a member of the Executive Council and regarded as the chief henchman of Wang Ching-Wei, leader of the Leftist Party, and a personal enemy of Chiang Kai-Shek.
The assassination is causing uneasiness to many prominent Government officials residing in the foreign concessions which have hitherto been looked upon as a sanctuary. ■ .
