THE NEW HEBRIDES
FRENCH INTERESTS FOR SALE
LONDON, 18th February.
The negotiator/for tho sale of French interests in the New Hebrides has interviewed the' assistant-secretary to the Australian High Commissioner, who intimated Sir Granville Ryrie's desire for an extension of tho period of ►consideration. The negotiator reiterated that the option terminated on *20th February. The secretary protested that an ex--tension was desirable, enabling the .fullest investigation into titles. Tho negotiator, replied: "You had tamplc time to investigate, but if the Government is still not satisfied I will •endeavour to obtain a short extension." It is understood that in the event of ■jio sale a Commonwealth colonial trading organisation is desirous of buying.
A message published last week stated that it was Understood that a negotiator was now in London for tho purpose pf offering tho Commonwealth the majority of holding French interests in ISSew Hcbridean properties. Realising the importance of this holding to Austrjalian interests, tho negotiator obtaVned an extension of the option of saAs to 20th February. He. said that th©> Japanese authorities in Paris manifested the keenest interest and were maVcing enticing overtures, but he had decided to afford the Commonwealth tlio first* refusal, which, he claimed, virtually carried proprietorial rights in the New Hebrides.
