AT WOODVILLE

MERRY DAMON'S CUP,

TOXEUMA BEATEN

f" By Telegraph.—From "Vedette."

■', IFrom a racing "point of view it is! Houbtful if the Woodville Club lias ever 1 had a better day titan that of yesterday. The finish for, the' Cup was particularly fine, ■with two-thirds of the field- spread across.ithe course at the .judge's line. Merry Damon scored with a lucky run on the rails. Toxeuma was* decidedly ■unlucky in. the sprint event, as he was not going evenly at any stage,' and struck trouble in the straight. He was beaten by a narrow margin by Arikinui. A very fine field of two-year-olds paraded for the Sapling Stakes, some of whom will go on to better things. The .winner, Lineage, -has been off the scene since she won the Avondale Stakes in the ■ early spring. She will be improved by the race. .■ ■ > Trentham stables were again well to the -'- fore, E. J. Murtagh .winning with Ariki- " nui and Habit, arid S. Reid with Lineage, while minor places Went to Limosin and Dolomite. Mr. H. Connop, who oflieiated as ■: starter, ■ had some large and awkward ■ fields with which to deal. Considering he is the latest recruit to this branch, he gave a very fair display. There was. a moderate attendance considering the favourable weather. The track was in excellent order. The 'toialisa- . tor returns for the day were £17,341, compared with £15,471 last yeai\ MAIDEN STAKES. Leisure, Air Laddie, and "Spearful were •the only ones backed to any degree. Leisure and Kali bgean best from Air Laddie, Lueretia, and, Rangimahoe. Leisure was soon joined by Winloch, and they showed the way across the top from Air Laddie, with Merry Melody... and Kali .. aiext. Air. Laddie ran past the leaders just after entering the straight, ■ and Merry Melody came through on the rails. Air Laddie was not really troubled to win by a length from Merry Melody, who was ridden right out. Leisure was two lengths- away third, with Kali, Spearful, and Acrospire nest, well clear of the remainder. ' '- . ■ Air Laddie,' after many disappointments, at last worked his way out of maiden-plate ranks, giving P. Davis an early start since setting: up as. a public trainer. Air Laddie won very easily, and should soon score , ; again. Merry Melody ran a sound race after not getting any the best of the start. Leisure again fau- .' ed to stay. Kali and Winloch showed some pace, and Spearful and Lordlike should improve. ..- ORINGI HIGHWEIGHT. : Goldlike and' Royal Acre were the favourites, with, fair support for Cook and - Tunbridge. , Tent Call and First Ruler led out of the, straight1 from Battle '■ Torque, Cobk^ '.-■ Tunbridge, > and Airtight. Goldlike and Red Bank" moved up smartly going to the half-mile, where • Tent Call ' and First Ruler just led a "bunch composed of Cook, Battle Torque, Red Bank, Goldlike, and .Tunbridge. Tent Call and ' First Ruler turned for home first from Goldlike, Cook, Tunbridge, and " Royal Acre, who moved up fast. Tunbridge came through- a furlong from home .to beat Cook by a neck, the pair fighting out a good finish. Goldlike was three lengtha away third,, with Royal Acre fourth and Tent Call, Airtight, and Birst Ruler, following at intervals. _■ ■ Tunbridge, with A. E. Ellis, up, just won, but was sticking on. Cook ran a very solid race, and his-turn is not far away., Goldlike was not well ridden, and was not disgraced. Royal, Acre finished well after meeting trouble in the early stages. Tent Call ran quite a .fair, race, and First Ruler did well to the turn. ... , . WOODVILLE CUP. Oratrix was a good favourite,!with both winner and. runner-up at., lppg. prjees. Merry Damon, 'Stanchion, and Royal .Game1 delayed the start, from which Blimp, showed-out first. Royal Game led down the straight' from Marjoram, Blimp, Oratrix, Merry Damon; Mountain Heath, ..Count Palatine; and Star Area. At' the sis-furlong post Royal Game and Marjoram showed-the way to Oratrix, Mountain Heath, and Billion, with Count Palatine, Blimp, Discourse, and Stanchion next. Billion and Royal Game showed the way passing the half-mile from Count Palatine, Mountain Heath, Marjoram, and Oratrix, in line,' with Blimp and Discourse aiext. The order was practically the same Into the straight, where the field closed iip. A great race home saw eight horses spx'ead across the course, all Jkard. at it. Merry Damon, on the rails, just got up Jo beat Billion by a head, with Count Pal- : atine half a head away third. Blimp was only inches away fourth, with Star. Area, Oratrix, Stanchion,. and 'Mountain •Heath.right, up in line with him. Mar- ' joram was* next. '■■■■• '■~■'., , Merry Damon finished very, well, aided by a good run on the' rails. He just reached Billion, who rair his best race to date. Count Palatine really had every chance, but his effort was a good one ■ nevertheless. Blimp and Mountain Heath showed tip well, and the racing will improve Oratrix. and Star Area; The latter as due- at any time. Stanchion, was very wide out round the turn,-.-and .finished very well. Marjoram will do better, before long. Royal Game and Discourse . were • outclassed. ■ SAPLING STAKES. Lineage, who was considered favourably handicapped for a classic winner with 7.4, •was a good favourite. Hawkshaw jumped i,Diit clear from a straggling start with Mmuiri, Tur Baby, Lineage, Mid Appier ■ dots next. HSwkshaw led to tte straight from LineastJ Tar Baby, RoyaV Routine, Jason, and Manuiri. Lineage ran to the front in the straight, but had to be kept going to beat Appledorc, who iimsnea well by threequarters of a Jength. Hawkshaw was half a length away third with Ttoyal Routine a head back fourth. Manuiri, Jason, and Star of Gold were next. Lineage was too good for this field, although not at her best. At the same time she was a trifle lucky to beat Appledore, who had a very interrupted run in the middle stages. Hawkshaw had every chance. Royal Routine, a fine gelding by Hunting Song from Royal Moment, put up a great performance from 19 at the barrier. He looks like being extra good. Manuiri had every chance. Jason (Hunting Song—Blue Jay) and Star of Gold (Hunting Song—Etoile dOr) both ran fine races They will not be long off the winning list, especially Star of Gold. Whelk, who was left, is a Leighton gelding bearing a decided likeness? to Cimabue. Arajean lost all chance at the start. RUAHINE HANDICAP. Toxeuma was an odd.^on favourite with 'Aclkiuui" a solid second choice. Toxeunia.

showed out first from Arikinui and Royal Duke.. Arikinui took charge at tho end o£ a furlong from Broad Acre and Toxeiima, being followed by Fernden, Royal Parade, and Royal Duke, with Goblm Market and Bouogne at the rear of. the field. Royal/ Parade improved a little racing for the turn. Arikinui took the lead a furlong from home with Toxeuma pushing through and Fernden making a good effort... Arikinui just beat Toxeuina by a head, with Fernden half a head away third. Goblin Market finishing on was right up fourth,'and Broad Acre and JRoyal Duke next. , „ Arikinui stayed out the six furlongs well and just' stalled oS Toxeuma. Toxeuma met with some trouble about a furlong from1' home, and had to be checked. It is quite possible this cost him the race. Fernden ran a solid race and Goblm Market finished particularly well from a long way back. Broad Acre and Royal Parade showed pace for five furlongs. COUNTY HANDICAP. Limosin and Brown Sugar were the favourites, but the winner turned up in the long-expected Paiko at a good price. Paiko, on the rails, began very smartly from Mandy, Brown Sugar, Limosin, Clpyne, and Push. Emotion joined Push racing. for the turn, otherwise there was little change. Paiko stayed on to win by a length and a half from Limosin, who beat Abbey Queen by half a length. Mandy was fourth and Lackham, Push, and Brown Sugar right up next. Paiko, a three-year-old by Chief Ruler, won his race at the start. Limosin was overhauling him at every stride and but for an unlucky run on the rails might have won. Abbey Queen and Lackham both finished well, but Mandy was stopping at the end. Emotion turned mulish at the barrier and did not race generously. Push finished well. Brown Sugar looked 'bright* but raced in disappointing fashion. . .'• ■•■■;■ VICTORIA HACK CUP. Grecian was a pronounced first choice and confidently ridden won in'good style. High Society and Kiriana led past the stands from Dolomite, Banhridge, and Royal. Opera (who almost fell). High Society and Banbridge were in charge at the six furlong post from Painting, Mothplane, Dolomite, Grecian, and Disrank. At the half mile post High Society, Mothplane, and Banbridge led Waterspear, Kiriana, Grattus, and Dolomite, with Grecian a couple o£ lengths back. Grecian moved up behind the leading bunch at the turn and gradually cut them down to win by half a length from Grattus, who beat Dolomite by a length and a half. Skyrider was. fourth and Waterspear, Mothplane, Banbridge followed iv that order. Grecian gave the leaders a big start over the last half mile, but finished full of running. to beat Grattus,: who was well placed all the way. Dolomite was not ovei'-lueky, but really no excuse could be offered for him. Skyrider was on the extreme outside at the finish, going very well. Waterspear, Mothplane, and Banbridge went good races., High Society did not stay on. ' . PRESIDENT'S HANDICAP. Habit was a decided favourite,, and getting the best of the start was not troubled. Royal Lineage, Balloon, and Chopin •were hopelessly left, and Habit and First Money shot out clear from Full Mark, Malayan?- G'allanmore, Briar Root. First Money was checked and Habit and Malayan showed the way round to the turn clear of First Money and Briar Root, who were followed by The Swell, Callanmore, and. Full Mark. Habit came on to win easily by a length and a;half from The Swell, who beat Full Mark by two lengths. Malayan was fourth and Head Sei'ang, Moorland, and Briar Root next. Habit had matters made fairly easy for her and it looked as if with an even chance at the start both The Swell and Full Mark would have troubled her. They ran first-class races and finished well. Malayan ran a respectable race. Head Serang and Moorland were going on with it. As,a test of merit the bad start made the form quite; unreliable to follow.
