CROQUET
WELLINGTON .TOURNAMENT
A high northerly wind mado matters 'rather unpleasant for the players in the Wellington Croquet Tournament yesterday, especially tliosc playing on Riddiford Park lawns, and the games were a little prolonged on that account. One game in the club pairs took more than five hours to complete. ■ . ■ Mrs. Gilbert (Westport), who is partnered with Mrs. Brice (Hataitai)- in the handicap doubles* played very good croquet. Her long shooting was excellent, and in one of their games she only missed two shots of any length. In the match against Mesdames Austin and Scott; Mrs. Gilbert made a pretty, break o£ 10 when thol. opponents let her in at the second hoop. Mrs. Caldow (Wellington) gave a good exhibition of the game too, and later Mrs. Walker (Waimarie) made several points for her own ball, one for her partner, and one for an opponent, finishing the turn with three clips in hand. It has been suggested that croquet caddies will bo required if hoops are .to be.made in this wholesale fashion. ■: ■ Tho following games were completed after midday yesterday:—Club pairs, second round: Mesdames Kelly and Taylor (Waimarie) beat Mrs. Flint and Miss Saunders (Karori), 20-22; Mesdames Johnson and Walker (Waimarie) beat Mesdames Lowery and Butcher (Karori). 26-" 15; Mesdames Savage and Mouat' (Waimarie) beat Mrs. Hendry and Miss Wilkins(Hutt), 26-21; Mesdames Caldow and Henderson (Wellington) . beat Mesdames Hecnan and Robinson (Eastbourne), 26-S.
