MIDNIGHT ARREST

ACCUSED PLEADS GUILTY

When tho name of Eobert Irvine Owens, tho man who was arrested at midnight by Constable Gattauach recently, just after he had broken into tho shop of Watchman Bros, at Earori, was called in tho Magistrate's Count to-day, the accused intimated tliat ho intended to plead guilty to all the charges- preferred against ■ him, . V

Owens, who' was described as a labourer, aged 28, was charged with breaking and entering the shop of Watchman Bros., with intent to commit theft; breaking and entering the same shop between 30th January and 12th February of this year, and stealing tobacco, matches, money, and other goods, of a total value of £21 14s 3d; breaking, and entering the house of Alice Mary Denniston-Wood, at Karori, and stealing goods to the value of £3 16s; breaking and entering the house of Margaret Bishop at-Wadestown, and stealing articles valued at &6; and stealing sweets valued at 12s, the property of some person unknown.

Detective E.G. Jarrold produced a number of statements made by the accused; in which he admitted^ all.' the offences. The accused said tliat he had been, out Of work sineo September, 1929. On the accused formally pleading guilty, Mr. E. Page, S.M., committed him to the Supreme Court for sentence.
