The Europa, the Bremen's sister-ship, now rebuilt since last year's disastrous lire, is undergoing speed trials in the North Sea thij. week. II is elainu d that her engine tests have already proved her to be several knots faster than the Bremen, whoso record of 4 days 14-J hours from New York to Cherbourg she is expected to attack at her first crossing on 19th March. She carries a crew of nearly 1000, with accommodation for 2200 passengers.
The Europa will bo followed by a further monster, the Columbus, whose maiden trip is fixed for 23rd May. The Germans claim that the trio wi]! make
the fastest weekly transatlantic ser vice in history.
Meanwhile there is a big effort'afoot lo challenge German supremacy. The Cunard Line is laying down two liners of C 5,000 and 70,000 tons respectively, while the White Star Line's two new 2-7,000-ton motor vessels will be in service by May. ' '
