Another attempt to induce the Premiers of tho various States to .co-operate v>':tl" the Commonwealth in the unification of tho Australian railway gauges wiii bo made at a conference this week at Canberra between the Commonwealth and Slato Ministers.
The estimated cost of the work is £25,000,00 Q. Portion of tho. unification in Western Australia and New South Wales is already completed at a cost of nearly £5,000,000.
The Prime Minister will suggest that, the work be resumed, the cost of which will lie shared by tho-. States and the Commonwealth, and should occupy seven years. Tho Commonwealth will bear a one-fifth share of the cost.
Tho railway gauge recommended by experts is four feet eight and a half inches. . r
Mr. Sculliu emphasises that %a standard gauge will prevent loss and delay in the transportation of perishable goods, reduce operating costs, and give more rapid access to markets, apart from its use in times of national emergency. . .
