NGAIO LIBRARY

A CROWING VENTURE

WILL CITY TAKE IT OVER?

About.five years, ago the people of Ngaio set other suburbs a very good example in the matter of helping themselves by instituting their'own lending library, and have since carried it on by voluntary work with increasing success, until at present the library has • increased and the number of books issued has grown to. such an extent that the committee .feels' it can no longer carry, the venturo on as should be done. Yesterday afternoon, therefore, Messrs. T. D. H. Hall, chairman of the- Library Coiiiniiltoe, G. R. Drew, secretary, and Mrs. Lippett, who has had charge of the accounts, waited upon the Libraries Committee.of the City Council and asked'that tho city should take the library over. . , ...Mr. Hall said, that various amounts had been raised by means of concerts and .other functions and the committee had also received sums. and books from -various residents . and, £20. from the council for the purchase of books other than fiction, and with those amounts, donations and- revenue, from subscriptions ■ ami " extras. had built. up the library to one. of 2200 books. The library,-h'ad.been open two afternoons and each evening in the week, but so considerable -;was the increase in the number of issues lately'that the committee found it could not keep up with tho whole of the work. Last year maintenance, heating,; repair- of books, etc., had cost £17 17s 3d, and new books £58," > „ . ; / In reply to questions, Mrs. Lippett said that'the library was self-support-ing..,. '-■-.. ■ ' -■. ,■ . The chairman of the Libraries Committee, Councillor. T. C. A. Hislop, said that ho could assure the deputation that the proposal had tho heartiest support from every member of the committee, for tho entcrpri3O shown by tho people of Ngaio deserved . full recognition. Whether the city could takojthe library over would depend wholly 'upon finance, .and as a matter of fact his committee had placed the question of talcing ovor the Ngaio library upon the list for consideration when tho estimates for next year were being considered. Ho hoped that the difficulty of finance could bo surmounted. '. .
