CROQUET

WBLLINGTOxNT TOURNAMENT

: There was a large attendance all day yesterday at the Wellington Association croquet tournament, now in progress at Lower Hutt. Handicap doubles were played, and a good number of games got through for a first day. , After the.heavy rain of the week-end the lawns were somewhat heavy, but with the brilliant sunshine had dried out considerably by the end o£ the day, and give promise of being very keen if the good weather continues. As is. usual, for a first day and1 handicap events, the play was generally on the cautious side, aud there was nothing .spectacular in the matches. In some cases the \ combined bisques were 24, so that with such odds against them it was only to'be expected that opponents would avoid taking risks.. With the comiuencement to-day of the*other events, play will open up and improve." Mrs. Harper, Upper ,Hutt, and Mrs. Mouat, Waimarie, both made good breaks of eight.
