SYDNEY, 17th February,

A gale of cyclonic force, accompanied by torrential rain, swept tho north coast of. New South Wales and the southern border of Queensland yesterday afternoon.

The wind wrought havoc among houses, farms, public buildings* and churches in the Tweed Bivcr districts, Coolaiiga'tta, and thy Hunter Kiver Valley. Telegraphic communication has been entirely cut off for the past twenty-four hours. A number of houses were blown off the foundations, and iron roofs carried away for a distance of live hundred yards. Wooden churches were wrecked and fences levelled in tho Munvillumbah district, whero rain.l'd lin sheets, upwards of soven inches in a few hours.

All the rivers as fur south as Kempsey arc rising so rapidly that the danger of Hooding is imminent. - The wind reached a velocity of 80 miles an hour.

Residents describe the storm as the worst for fifty years. No lives aro reported lost. : . , . The storm has moved towards' New Zealand. ■ ___
