Mr. Theodore, the Federal Treasurer^ in reply on behalf of the Federal Government to the Labour Conference; criticism and direction, said the Gov* ernment will submit to no outside die* tation, but will act upon its own: judg* ment and responsibility. "The Government has no power arbitrarily to take over the mines, nor hava we any warrant for sending Commonwealth troops to the coalfields/ hs said. "We already have done everything which our extremely limited powers will permit to bring about a settlement in the coal dispute. We are still in close contact with the unions concerned in the hope of finding a.solution."
