AT WANGANUI
CIMABUE BEATS PAGANELLI
TANERIRI STAYS WELL
(By Telegraph from "Vedette.") It was unfortunate Ihat heavy rain affecting the track spoiled the Jackson Stakes at Wanganui on. Saturday, for Paganelli was obviously nnsuited more than Cimabue by the going. On a. dry track the pair would have provided a rare tussle,- and the even betting on the pair would have been a fair estimate. On the day Cimabuc was definitely superior. He is in great iettle at present.
Two Aucklanders, Corinax and Taueriri, played the most prominent part in the Earle Stakes, Taneriri prevailing in the final struggle. This is his first ■ victory beyond a mile and a quarter, and he made the running and stayed out "the 'twelve furlongs* wtll.
Moa Bird, after being clow away 'from the barrier in the sprint, just wore down Arikinui, to win in the last few strides. This mare is back to her best form.
Saturday at Wnngaiwi was a most unpleasant day. It was very hot and steamy, even though heavy rain fell at intervals, until hall' the programme was disposed of. The weather then cleared, and it was oppressively hot. The track, although well rolled between races, was rather treacherous, and provided very faulty going. All things considered, there was a fair attendance. The totalizator returns were -£21.407, against X 25,577 10s
last year, making a total for the meeting of £00,318, or a dccroa.se oi £1023 10s. AUTUMN HANDICAP. Awaken and Equituut were the favourites, Awaken being very heavily backed, while Aulopay was again at good uilds. Awaken and Ilhicwui received all tlio worst of an uneven start, from which Blue Paper, Arisus, Autopay, Equitaiit, Rose Lupin, and Treasury did best. Arisus closed 'oh Blue Paper at the turn, and Autopay came away from Equitaiit, going up oil the rails at the turn. Autopay stayed, on well and beat Arisus by threequarters of a ; length, with Blue Paper two lengths back. Equitaiit was fourth just ahead of Isa, Kose Lupin, Awaken, and Treasury. Autopay registered a first-class performance,, for he finished full of grit on the rails. He gave Blue Paper a good three lengths- at the turn. Arisus* finished better than Blue Paper, who gained all his. advantage at the start. Equitaiit did noi show any real dash, and apparently was still feeling the effects of being kicked on the first day. Awaken, who waa caught by the barrier, and Treasury, lost all chance at the start. Isa did well after getting away badly, and finished fifth, ■ ' . HARRISON HANDICAP: Kuanui, Otaiii, Dolomite, and Pailomi were practically equally backed. Dolomite was cut back at barrier rise, and Consent, Kuanui, Paitonu, rind Monsogne led out of the .straight, with Dolomite Just. Consent and Monsognc led down the back from Kuanui and Paitonu, with O'.airi and Dolomite next. Paitonu went up approaching the turn, where Monsogne fell, and joined Consent. Paitonu headed off Consent a furlong from home, but 1-tua-nui finished too well, and beat him by half a length. Consent was two lengths back third, with Otairi fourth, and Star Area arid Dolomite following. Kuanui put up a good performance, and was lucky to clear Monsogne when he fell. B. H.'/Morris, on the winner, appeared to outride the horseman on Paitonu, who should .-have won. Consent showed improved form. Otairi was beaten by his weight,'"and Dolomite apparently did not appreciate the shifty/track, and also he lost considerable ground at the start. Star Area finished on well from a long way back.; .. ■ JACKSON STAKES. Paganelli carried only £66 more than Cimabue, both being at fair prices in a four-horse field. .Cimabue actually showed out first from Pagauelli, but Paganelli, on the rails,.took the lead before, a fnrlong had been covered, with Tenterden on his quarters, and Cimabue and Jenny ,Diver : about a length back. They took Msec for the first furlong, and 49 l-ssee for the half-mile. ■ Tenterden ran a little wide at the turn, 'carrying off Jenny Diver, who had moved up on the outaide, and Cimabue shot through fhe gap. He had Paganelli in trouble a furlong from home, and beat him by a length and a quarter. Tenterden was six lengths, away third, a length, in front of Jenny Diver. Cimabue handled the track conditions best of all, and was going away. He was lucky at the turn, but probably would have won anyway. Paganellii floundered a little at the straight entrance, but no excuse could be offered. The. two-year-olds/were, well beaten. FORDELL HURDLES. Bqrsalene and Democratic disputed favouritism, but at liberal prices. Jokeform led for- a mile from Borsalene, Democratic, Aurora Borealis, and Panorama in close order. At the five furlongs post Borsalene jumped to the lead, but Democratic soon raced up to her, and they .showed the way round to the turn clear of Jokeform and. Aurora Borealis,. with Panorama tailed off. Democratic and Borsalene jumped the last fence on terms, Democratic coming ;on in the last furlong to win, decisively by two lengths. Jokeform was two lengths away third, and Aurora Borealis beat Panorama home. Democratic handled his 11.1 and the sloppy ground well, and scored nicely from Borsalene, who put up a good performance. Jokeform went an improved race, and Aurora Borealis will do better later. Panorama.showed no'dash.at all. OKOIA HACK HANDICAP. Joyspear and My Own between them carried half the total invested. Joyspear led down the straight from My Own, Thrift, Auctioneer, Warfille, and Valma. Soviet had charge at the six-t'urlong post from Joyspear, Thrift, My Own, Auctioneer, and Warfille, with Kilorell going up fast. Auctioneer and Kilorell led round the top to the turn from My Own, Valma, and Warfille, with Thrift and Joyspear being-cut backf. My Own came on in the straight to win easily by two lengths from Kilorell, who beat Auctioneer by a length and a half. Warfille was a head away fourth,: with Valma, Joyspear, Corwen, and Thrift following in that order. IMy Own at the finish beat this field rather decisively, although Kilorell was sticking on. after a good deal of use had been.made of him. Auctioneer ran quite a good race, and Warfille also shaped in promising fashion. • Both Joyspear and Thrift' struck trouble jn running.^ Valma ran a fair race.' EARLE STAKES. Corinax was backed down to odds on, but Taneriri sprang another surprise on, backers. Taneriri led through the straightfrom Corinax and Orazone, with Yonia, In the Shade, arid Cashier in line next, and Shrewd last. Yoma and In the Shade moved up at the five-furlong post, but In the Shade soon dropped back again. Taneriri and Corinax led at the half-mile from Orazone and ,Cashier, with Yoma handy and Shrewd moving up. Corinax and Taneriri raced in the lead to the ■■ turn clear of Orazone, Yoma, and Shrewd.:' Taneriri and Corinax came away from the rails in the straight, and Orazone came through and looked likely. - Over the last bit, however, Taneriri drew away to beat Corinax by a.length, with Orazone two lengths away. Yoma was fourth, six lengths back, and then at intervals came Shrewdi and Cashier and In the Shade last. Taneriri, well suited by the track, stayed on particularly well. He defeated Corinax fairly and squarely. Despite the fact that Corinax carried him right out in the straight. Orazone ran a really good race, and is very well at present. Old Yoma was disappointing, for he did not run on as'well as expected. Shrewd ran a fair race> but both In the Shade and Cashier cut up badly. MATARAWA HACK HANDICAP. .Cadland was a very hot. favourite', with solid support for Limousin and Zareiie. Joy Germ began best from Abbey Queen, Perenhis, Green Acre, Zarene, and Limosin, with Cadland' amongst those slow away. .At the half-mile Joy Germ and Abbey Queen showed the way, to Limosin, Zarene, Rewatoa, and.Cadland. Joy Germ and Abbey Queen, were just ahead of Limosin as they turned for home, with Cadland, Greeu Acre, Pcrenuis,- and Zarene all handy. Limosin headed oil' the leaders, but Perennis came fast and Limosin just stalled her off to win by half a head. Kentish Lad was two lengths back third, and Joy Germ, Cadland, Green Acre, Zarene, and. Potoaform were next. ' Limosin drew No. 12 at the'bart;ier, and rccbr'ded an excellent performance. At the same time,, he was lucky to beat Perenhis, ■who was1 not well placed at the turn, and would have won in another stride. Kentish Lad came on well into third .place.- Joy Germ showed a decided improvement on first day form, aud Cadland and Zarene again were unlucky in running. Potoaform was not sighted. FAREWELL HANDICAP. Arikinui was favourite in a great betting race for five runners. Arikinui and Acora began smartly from Freehold, while Moa Bird was slow away. They ran like this for three furlongs, when Moa Bird and Keddar moved up from the rear Arikinui and Acora just led Moa Bird and Keddar inlo the straight. A great race home saw Moa Bird wear down Arikinui and beat -him by ;i head. Keddar was three-quarters of a length away third, a head in front of Auora. Moa Bird's performance was really good, for she and Keddar had to race on the outside of the leading pair on the turn. She stuck to her task well, and just boat
Arikinui, on whom Gray rode a desperate finish. Keddar was unlucky, in having to go on the outside of Moa Bird all the way. Acorn made a creditable start in open company. ;md was by no means disgraced, i'reehold was outclassed at the finish.
