TROTTING
AT HUTT PARK
ARIKITOA'S DOUBLE
RACES IN HEAVY RAIN
Considering the unpleasant weather, vhich completely spoiled the latter part of the programme, it was not surprising that the Wellington Trotting, Club closed its February meeting, held at the Hutt Park on Saturday, with totalisator figures well below those of the corresponding meeting last year. The total was £22,740, as compared with £20,496 for February, ]02D, a drop of £37jG. The decrease, however, would probably have been more marked had the rain set in earlier. 'By the time the downpour commenced there was quite a good attendance, and'those who stayed-for the-concluding events were treated to ithe- somewhat unusual spectacle of horses and sulkies ploughing through sheets of water on the course, the drivers being liberally, spattered with mud and drenched to the skin. Although the fields were small, there were, several most interesting finishes. Arikitoa accounted for the principal event, the February Handicap, and came out again in the Electric Handicap, the last race, to snatch victory with an amazing burst of speed over the last furlong. Following are the descriptions of races decided after "The Post" went to press:— , SHARPE HANDICAP. .-"! Petronius won the Sharpe Handicap, although he had little to spare at the end. Eoyal' Iroquois went away /best, but he was passed in the first furlong by-Hardi-liess, who led to. the back' stretch, where Petronius put in a fast run, which, carried him to the front. He increased his lead coming into the straight, but the field closed up and he only had about half a length margin at the end from Lady Author, who beat Bessie Huon by a head. Alexis was a length away fourth. Glenlake' covered the first four furlongs ,at a ;smart rate, and then, broke badly when :near the leaders. ■ ' WILFORD HANDICAP. Writer won the Wilford Trot very easily. Miss Leda led "out at the start, with Tamahine, Quickfire, and; Jock Bingen following in that order, Writer being well back. Boneta, penalised 24yds, ibroke Tip. Miss. Leda.and Tamahine had a big breafcat. the end of the round from Jock Bingen, who just headed Quiekfire. With a round to go, Writer had improved his position, and he and Jock Bingen had gained considerably on the leading pair. Tamahine broke soon afterwards, and along the back Writer took charge, with Jock Bingen and Miss Leda next. Writer came on to the straight with a good lead and won with the greatest ease by four lengths from Quickfire, who came fast, and
just beat: Miss Leda. Jock Bingen was fourth, a length away, and Tainahine ami Boneta were <a long way back. MIDDLE CLASS HANDICAP. Salient, .who was the outsider of the field in the Middle Class Handicap, won very easily at the finish. Sandy Pointer was favourite, but he fell three furlongs from home, when in a good position. Nelsonian went out at the start with Salient and Wakefield next. Denver City did not begin well, but he quickly caught up with the field once he got going. The order was not changed for a round to go, but soon afterwards Sandy Pointer went to the front, and Wakefield was in second place, Salient being third. Wakefield headed Sandy Pointer, who fell soon afterwards, and Nelsonian again took charge coming into the straight, with Wakefield, Salient, and, El Direct next. Salient drew right away in the straight, and won.very easily by four lengths from Lydia, who finished fast, half a length in front of Nelsonian. Wakefield was fourth. ELECTRIC HANDICAP. Logan Princess was made a better favourite than Wilnia Dillon and Arikitoa, who was penalised 12 yards for his win earlier in the day. Wilma Dillon and Arikitoa began vciy smartly from the back marks, and at the end of two furlongs they were showing the way to Sonoma and Logan Pimcess. Arikitoa stayed on to beat- Wjlma Dillon by half a length, with Logan Puncess twelve lengths away thiid. Zclla headed the NOTES ON THE RACING. Glenrossie, who ■won the Ilutt Park Handicap in fast time, is a thiee-ycar-old by Matchlight fiom a Harold Dillon mare. He is trained by L. 0. Thomas at Lower Hutt. Gleniossie created a favourable impression when she last raced on the course, but few expected such a marked improvement. Bessie Huon paced a fine race in the Hutt Park Handicap, in which she finished second to Glenrossie. She made a good beginning, but had no chance with the winner, who went fast over the distance. Bessie Huon has been working well at Addington. Brent Zolock's good run at the last meeting made him favourite for the Hutt Park Handicap, but in a fast-run race he had no chance Hyith the fast-time horses. and finished in third place. The rest of the field were outclassed. Bbneta, who won the Nai Nai Handicap, is trotting very solidly now,, and N. L. Price deserves a lot of credit for his perseverance with the troublesome trotter. Boneta stays • well, but in the past she •has'gone away badly in her races, and failed to .settle down properly. :■ Jock Bingen, like the winner in the Nai Nai Handicap, trotted without any mistake throughout the race, but Boneta was too good for. him: at the handicap. Jock Bingen would have done better over a longer'journey. ■ Arikitoa's performance in the February Handicap was full of merit, as after the first furlong he, led the field throughout, and stayed out the finish in good style. He is one of the few of Taraire's stock racing, and like his sire possesses great stamina. He has been racing in sprint events, and has been consistent in his latest performances. Where Arikitoa was pacing during the race seemed to be the worst part of the track. The going' in the February ■ Handicap
seemed to suit Real Light. ■He made a capital beginning, and it was not long before he was with the 1 ders. He lost his place rounding the top turn the last time, but once in the straight finished resolutely, and" just got second place in a desperate finish. Native Hero won the Railway Handicap in good style. He got a good lead after the first furlong, and this was greatly to his advantage. Native Hero was bred by the late Mr. B. Shadbolt, and is by Native King from The Limit. He is a very quality-looking pacer, particularly useful over short courses. He is trained in the Wairarapa district, and was one of the outsiders of the field, paying a double figure dividend. The favourite for the Railway Handicap, Sandy Pointer, was somewhat unlucky in the race. Until the last furlong and a half he was tucked in on the rails, and was,, giving the leader too much in the final stages. Sandy Pointer ■ finished fast once he got a run, and had the distance been a trifle further would have won. Baron Bingen, who was well backed in the Railway Handicap, had a bad passage in the race. He did not get clear of the stoppage in the first furlong, and lost a lot of ground. He finished well, and may win a race over a short course in the near future. Petronius had very little to spare* at the conclusion of the Sharpe Handicap. D. Withers sent him along 'very fast- in the back stretch, which left him without any reserve at the- end. Petronius is by Nelson Bingen from Cameos, the dam of Onyx, but up to the present he has Loen seen best over short courses. He, was just beaten by Harold Lee over the same distance at the club's last meeting. , . Lady Author, who was second to Petronius in the Sharpe Handicap, is trained at Petone, and is by Author Dillon from an Irvington mare." She paced solidly all the way, and was overhauling the winner fast at the end of the race. Writer, on the somewhat heavy track, trotted one of his best races in the Wilford Handicap. Donald allowed him to get properly1 into his gait before sending the .back marker at his top, and Writer responded in fine style. He stayed on better than any in the race, and won with ease. Writer is fast working himself into the best company amongst the trotting division.- ... '~... Quickfire looked hopelessly out of the contest in the AVilford Handicap in the last half mile, but once he hit the straight he came on fast and got second. It looked, as though he might have been closer to the winner had his driver made more use. of him in "the; first mile. 'Qiiickfire went very steadily throughout tlie race. Salient is' evidently a better pacer in i the mud than on a good course. In the Railway Handicap he stopped badly, but on the very bad track in the Middle Class Handicap he paced soundly all the way, and stayed out the distance easily. He is a big, powerfully built pacer, whose action does not indicate that he is much good on a bad track; Lydia did' not pace with her usual freedom in the Middle'■ Class Handicap, but in the concluding stages she came fast, and got, second. There would probably have been a different result had the track been dry. Arikitoa and Wilma Dillon had the concluding event to themselves. Arikitoa made light of his twelve yards penalty and-fairly outstayed Wilma Dillon. The
latter as usual showed pace, but did not : stay on. He is not improving in stamina. , The favourite, Logan Princess, was never a possibility.
