Bey«r;.'of the Wellington .Working Men's • Club ■ and ' Literary Institute, for the game -that ,he;■■ = won .from Mr■• Hereward Topp (Ngaio C.C.) in round 12. The game that Mi\ Beyer won from Mr. Elliot Rutherfurd, of. Stratford, m round 10 was also very favourably reported upon by the judges. Mr. Beyer's success is very popular with his acquaintances, as he is a very unassuming and gentlemanly young player. Before leaving Den-, mark a year ago he had some useful practice in'the Aalb.org. and Copenhagen Chess Clubs, including some, games _witn \ Niemzowitsch, the well-known European great-master. He has also improved his play by having 'made- a close study ot various Danish and German books on "the royal game." BRILLIANCY PRIZES. From a perusal of old files it: would ap-. pear that the first Brilliancy- Prize at New Zealand's Chess Congresses was that donated 35 years ago by Mr: E.
