COMPANY LIABLE

ACCIDENT ON STEAMER

Judgment for the plaintiff for £477 Is was given by Mr. Justice Reed in the Supreme Court action in which Eudolf Finderup, waterside worker, claimed £691 damages from the New Zealand Shipping Company and the Wellington Harbour Board for injuries received through being struck by a hatch beam oii the steamer Tasmania last September. His Honour, in summing up, said he considered that the defendant company's servants had been negligent as they ought to have known of the risk.of the beam which injured the plaintiff coming .into contact with tho bollards as it descended. As no steps had been taken to avert such a possibility, it was held that tho company's negligence caused the accident. Judgment was accordingly entered against the company. Mr. P. J. O'Regan appeared for the plaintiff, Mr. J. F. B. Stevenson for the Harbour Board, and Mr. 11. F. O'Leary for the company.
