SMASH AT OHAKUNE

.TWO HUNDRED SHEEP KILLED

END UP IN A SWAMP

OHAKUNE, This Day.

A train of 27 trucks of sheep left Eaetihi at 12.30 a.m., and when between Rochfort and Ohakuuo it was found that the engine was uuablo to draw the load. The train divided, tho engine taking about 15 trucks on to Ohakune Junction, leaving tho guard in charge of the remainder. The guard put on the brakes and went along the line placing detonators to warn the engine-driver when returning of his approach to the trucks.

The trucks, however, started off, and,, gathering speed, travelled about seven miles, round several curves, over^ bridges, and up inclines and a gradient of 1 in 50, and crashed into a stop-i block at the terminus of tho line at tho end of the Eaetihi station yard.

The van and about nine loaded! trucks went over a bank. Tho truckjj were smashed, and the van damaged! and buried in a swamp up to the floor.

About 200 sheep were killed and others were injured. The sheep were bought at Messrs. Freeman and JacUeon'a ewe fair on Thursday.

No one was hurt,
