CENTENARY YEAR

GEOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY

HISTORY IN PREPARATION

(From "The Post's" Representative.) • LONDON, 2nd January.

Tho King, who is Patron of the Royal Geographical Society, lias approved the draft proposals of the Council for celebrating the centenary of tho Society on 21st, 22nd, and 23rd October.

The president, Colonel Sir Charles Close, and Council have received through His Majesty's private secretary the following reply to their communication:—"The King desires me to thank the.' President, Council, and Fellows of the Society for so kindly informing him of the proposed centenary celebrations in October next. At this distance of time it is not possible for His Majesty to give any definite reply to tho request that ho should preside at the principal ceremony, including the opening of the now hall and library; but, if unable to bo present himself, His Majesty will hope to deputo one of the Koyal Princes to represent him on that' occasion."

The opening of the new wing, the principal feature of which is a lecture hall, ,will form an important addition to the society's premises at tile junction of Kensington Gore and Exhibition Boad. The biiilding, already in course of construction, will cost about £50,000, and-with its completion there will be brought to fruition one of the great ambitions of tho lato Marquis Curzou. It was duo to his energy and devotion to the task of rehousing that tho Society was enabled to move, in 1912, from Savilo Bow to Lowthcr Lodge.

To celebrate the approaching centenary a new history of the Society is being written by Dr. Hugh Robert Mill, which will, it is hoped, bo ready by next autumn.

The Fellowship of the Society has grown from 4(30 in 1830 to between 6000 and 7000 in the year just ended.
