ELECTION OF MAYOR AT THE ZOO

There was great excitement amongst the animals at the Zoo,.as the annual election of Mayor was to take place in the Town Hall, in three days' time. " . y' Three candidates were nominated, Leo Lion, Tim Tiger, and Jumbo the Elephant. The parrots talked about it all day long, and the monkeys discussed the subject while eating peanuts. The Polar Bear, striding up and down in his cage, paused now and again,to gaze at his cousins the Black-Bears over the way, wrinkling his brow at the thought of ihecoming fray. Leo Lion and Tim Tiger roared at each other ..from behind iron bars. Jumbo Elephant in his house, was so concerned that his appetite failed, which worried his keeper exceedingly. ■■■:.■••■ At last Election Day arrived. Long before the booths were opened the Monkey brothers were there in full, force,; and to fill up time, ate quantifies of peanuts, strewing the steps liberally with empty shells. All the animals injurn.came and voted, while the candidates fretted the more. When all had cast their votes the counting took place. While fhis process was being carried out, Jumbo consumed countless bananas; Leo Lion refreshed himself with a nice juicy bone, while Tim Tiger .ha>l nothins at all. ■ . ■ . : . .. .• ; Before the result'was known, the excitement was intense; as' Leo 'hoTiffht he was sure to.be elected, being King of Beasts.-Tim Tiger thought the choice would fall on him, on account of his beautiful.stripesj but 'iimbo said he would be Mayor because of his size and strength.' In the final counting, each candidate scored 46 votes, so they decided 'o fight it out. Jumbo and Leo had, the first round, and Leo retired ■"imprliatelv, as he had two black eyes and a bleeding nose. .Then came Tim's turn, and Jumbo soon trampled him underfoot, till he was black-and blue with bruises. ; ' ' ' "Now," said Jumbo, "I am the victor, therefore I am Mayor." When Leo in bandages and Tim in poultices saw Jumbo again, he was-strutting about eating apples, and looking very important and welLsatisfied will himself. ' , . .
