ATHLETICS
SOUTHERN PERFORMERS
■ (By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") DUNEDIN, This Day.
There were one, or two outstandingly good performances at the Athletic Meeting at Forbury Park. Three runners broke 4 mm 30sec for one mile. This event was won by J. Lovelock, a University runner, off 15yds, in 4min 23 3-sscc, and only 12 yards behind hira was L. A. Wood, the scratch man, who finished fourth, just ahead of the other scratch man, J. JMorris, who whs making his first appearance this season. ■ Lovelock was second id the -Gtttgo mile last season, when making his first appearance in a championship competition, and he. .is likely to'keep Morris and Wood busy this season. Ho has anice style and a-guod stride, and bia success is all the more-remarkable because after the close of the last athletic season he broke" his icg.- : Morris was running bis' first race, and it wusorily over the last bit that he was found.wanting. L. C. M'Lachlan, the New Zealand half-mile champion, assured the scratch team^.ot victory in the mile medley relay, Civil Service-covering the distance iv 3min 41 ccc. M'Lachlan's time for the half-mile was 2min Isec, out two nights later he was beaten in the Civil Service quartermile championship by C. J. Thompson in 53 3-ssec, M'Lachlan's usual finish being lacking. Competition in the middle distance and distance, events promises to be exceptionally keen at the Otago championships,1 which" are likely to be :- delayed a wfeek until Bth Marcli. ]■ ..'_;■' "Oversea athletes are to appear here next week, after, all, the New Council haviiig agreed ;to:reduce the guarantee for one meeting from that originally fixed for two. Lermond and Golding are to be invited to compete in two races each. In the one mile scratch race, Lermond will be opposed by J. J. Morris, J. Lovelock, L. A.. Wood, and J. H. M'Laren; and in the 440 yds short limit1 invitation handicap, GoMihg will be opposed by L. C. M'Lachlan, C. J. Thompson, E. A. Taylor, J. B. prumm, and possibly CM. Olsen, There is' also-a possibility of: the New Zealand quarter-mile champion,:. A; XV- Findlay-, coming from the Lakes District to compete in the hammer-throwing handicap. J. G. Leekie threw the 16lb hammer 143 ft ZMiv, not far short ot the New Zealand record.
