LONG ARM OF LAW

AR-RESTED AFTER. TWELVE

MONTHS

For nearly twelve months the police have been looking for Ben Gemmell, aged 26, on a charge of breaking and entering, but it was only the other day that he was arrested in Christchurch. He was brought up to Wellington, and this morning, before Mr. John E. Staples, J.P., and Mr. D. Keir, J.P., in the Magistrate's.Court, he was charged with having, on Ist January of this yeur, broken and entered the premises of Charles William Hibbard in Cuba street and stolen'an overcoat and a sports coat, of a total value of £7 7s 6d. Chief-Detective Lopdell said that he was not. ready to proceed with the charge today, and he asked for a remand.

Sir. W. E. Leicester, who appeared for Gemmell, asked that the accused be allowed bail.

On this question the Chief-Detective said that the police had been looking for Gemmell for twelve months, and he had been rather evasive. He did not feel disposed to assent to bail, but if it was granted he thought it should be substantial. Bail was fixed at £100 and two sureties of £100 each, and,Gemmell was remanded until 21st January. He is to report daily to the police.
