DISAPPOINTING RESPONSE
(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.")
PALMERSTON N., This Day. A few days ago, the Mayor (Mr. A. J. Graham) issued an appeal for donations towards Christmas gifts for the poor, but judging from the response, his voice has been drowned amidst the general clamour of gift-civing and receiving, which if not more blessed is more satisfying. The result will be ,that the indigent of Palmerston North will hardly know Christmas, 1929. The Mayor has on his list of deserving cases 98 names, the families ranging from one to ten children. Up till Saturday donations from 19 persons and the Luncheon Club had realised £32 4s, which but filled a coiner of the purse which the Mayor had hoped would be bulging to make Christmas Day for those 98 unfortunates something like what it should be. Yesterday, with the help of the Commercial Travellers' Association, which donated fifteen guineas, nine other voluntary subscriptions, and by withdrawing £25 from his unemployment fund. Air. Graham was able to raise the total to £82 10s. How far this will go amongßt 98 families, readers can judge for themselves. '
