FAIR PROSPECTS

The burning question of the present moment concerns the-weather prospects for the Cliristmas holiday. Luckily, the recent cyclonic disturbance did" not come a day or two later, or it would havo spoiled the holiday. It has now passed away eastward, loaving cooler woathcr in its train. Barometers are rising again, and there are prospects of fairly good weather for tho next day or two. But reports from Australia indicate that the improvement is not likely to bo of very long duration and that the type of weather prevailing lately, a series of depressions with fine intervals between them, is likely to continue.

Moderate to strong south west winds are likely, reaching gale force in places.' but. decreasing in strength. Changeable weather with local passing showers may be expected prior to a general improvement to-morrow, and temperatures will be cool.

During the last 24 hours, with the passing eastward'df the cyclone, southerly winds have become general. These havo been boisterous in. the far north and on the East Coast south of Kaikoura. High tides have resulted in many places. .Ham has been fairly general, the heaviest falls being confined chiefly to Canterbury and Otago. Christchurch's fall of'l9B pointß is exceptionally heavy for that city. Temperature* nave fallen considerably, especially in the South Island.
