FISHERMAN'S ESCAPADE

(Seeeived 24th December, 2.15 p.m.) •LONDON, 23rd December. ' A • Stonehaven fisherman named George Knowles got drunk and put out to sea in a small boat, braving the fierce gale. The spectators were convinced that he would lose his life, and called out a lifeboat, which went to rescue Knowles. He refused assistance, ana returned safely to the harbour unaided. He was thereupon cliargcd with, while in a state of intoxication, proceeding to sea in a storm, and by his reckless conduct endangering his life and causing such alarm that the lifeboat was called out, and that he committed a breach of the peace. Knowles pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to a fortnight in prison without the option.
