Entertainment to suit all tastes is being provided throughout the Wellington district for tho Christmas holiday
For those who delight in "the sport of tings," there are tho Manawatu Racing Club's Meeting at Awapuui, opening on Boxing Day, and tho South Wairarapa .Trotting Club's Meeting at Clarcville.
There is also for sports lovers a wile rango of attractions closer at hand.
At tho Basin Reserve a special Boxing Bay athletic sports meeting is to be held, at which the champion cyclists of the Dominion—Prank Grose (Christchurch), Tom Oakley (Masterton), Milton Gane (Wellington), and Cyril Met); (Wellington) will show their endurance; pluck, and speed. There are also to be special ladies' events in which Miss T. Barron (Foxton), Miss C. Miller (Wellington), and Miss Hoyle (Napier), will take part; special Highland dancing competitions, whippet racing on tho flat and over hurdles, and a match between Charlie Jenkins and Jack Elliott.
On Boxing Night, at the Kilbirnie Stadium Speedway, will be seen the :"big six scratch points race," with I the best of broadsiders—Charlie Spinks L: Van Praag, and Arthur Mann (the great Australian trio), and Harry Mangham and Wally Kilmister (the New Zealand stars), making determined attacks on records. There will be a special tram service to the stadium. Thirteen thousand people, it is stated were thrilled at the Kilbirnie Speedway on Saturday night last, and it is anticipated that there will be an even greater crowd present on Boxing night. On Boxing Day, a monster Catholic picnic and sports gathering is to be held at Karori Park. The children's programme, which includes many novelty races, begins at 10.45 a.m.; and the adults' programme, which is to commence at 2.30 p.m., comprises several special events, including a hurling match. A band will be in attendance in the afternoon.
The Lyall Bay Surf Club announces a gala, with numerous sideshows and attractions, for Boxing Day and 27th December, and also for New Year's Day and 2nd January. Passenger flights from the Rongotai Aerodrome daily are announced. The special attractions at the Island Bay Beach Gala and the Petone Beach Carnival are bound to draw and delight large crowds on Boxing Day. The programmes are most attractive; and the galas will continue in full swing for over a week, closing on Saturday, 4th January.
This evening a Christmas Eve Carnival, with dancing from 8.30 p.m., is to be held at the Adelphi Cabaret, and arternoon and evening sessions are announced for Boxing Day. An excursion to Pic ton and Blenheim is to be run by the turbine steamer Maori on Boxing Day. The many lovers of cricket are also catered for. A junior representative cricket match will commence at Kelburfl. Park on Boxing Day, and will be continued on the Friday; and the Plunket Shield match between Canterbury and Wellington will commence at the Basin Reserve on Saturday, and be continued next week.
Special Christmas Day and holiday programmes are announced by a number of the picture theatres. i The Miramar Golf Club's New Year tournament'will be held on Ist. 2nd and 3rd January, 1930. The programme comprises the Miramar open amateur championship, over 18 holes, final, over 30 holes; the Miramar groups handicap over 18 holes; bogey handicaps, first and second days, over 18 holes, and the tour-ball handicap, last day, over 18 holes.
Limited bus and tramway services for Christmas Day are announced by Hie Tramways Department; and the Railway Department announces special train arrangements and additional bus
