PLEA IN DEFENCE

HUNGARIAN MURDER TRIAL

ISOLATION" AND POVERTY

(Bcceived 16th December, 10 a.v.)

BUDAPEST, 15th Docember.

At the poisoning trial Juliana Lipka was sentpnced to death and three other women to lifo imprisonment. The detection of tho murders was long postponed because tho local Coroner was related to the niidn-ifo Olah and returned verdicts of death by natural causes. Olah and another midwife began supplying poison to kill unwanted babies, and went on to supply larger doses for adults.

The defence demanded an inquiry into the difficulties of earning the nieagrest livelihood in an overcrowded district of small holdings surrounded by vast poorly-cultivated estates. Isolation and hopeless poverty were responsible for the condition, the menfolk's only recreation being heavy drinking. '
