MILITARY ASPECTS
POLICE ON THE ALERT
SYDNEY, 15th December. As a result of interviews by tho Miners' Union pickets, members of the Engine-drivers' Union, who went to Rothbury to work there when the mine re-opens on Wednesday, left camp last night.
It is not likely, however, that their .defection will impede the programme rt t the State- Government to have coal aiming out of the mine by tho middle oi the week.
.The polico last night kept a close watch all round tho Kothbury mine workings Camp, which has sprung up liko- a mushroom during the last 4S hoivtv. The camp bears a military appearance, and tho manager's office looks like army headquarters. High police officers in. tho stifling heat, and \voarii? 4 w little clothing, are poring over nmps showing the strategic points in tho locality.
The c*.ves of tho trade union movement arfl How on the Miners' Central Council, i»7hich will meet in Sydney on Tuesday, when, the question of the extension of the dispute to the other States will be decided. The balance of voting pftWer is held by the southern and western miners.
The proposed opening of the pits at Pelton will tfivide the strikers' "demonstration" forces.
