Mr. E. W. Kane, Clerk of Parliaments, accompanied by Mrs. Kane, returned to Wellington fxom Bptorua this afternoon.
The Wellington Presbytery has approved of the call of the congregation of the Kelburn Presbyterian Church to the Rev. John Hubbard, of Drury, Auckland.
Mr. B. S. Runciman, of Oamaru, has been appointed Town Clerk of Waimato from twenty-four applications, states a Press Association telegram.
A unanimous invitation to become general secretary of the Christian Endeavour Union of Great Britain has been received by the Rev. Lionel B. Fletcher, minister of Beresford Street Congregational Church, Auckland, and president of the New Zealand Christian Endeavour Union (states a Press Association telegram from Auckland). Before coming to the Dominion, Mr. Fletcher was president of the union which now seeks his services. :
A letter tendering his resignation as a member of the Wellington Boys' College staff in consequence of his appointment as headmaster of the Wairacapa High School was received at yesterday afternoon's meeting of the College Board of Governors from Mr. H. B. Tomlinson. "I can assure members of the board," wrote Mr. Tomlinson, "that it is with regret that I sever a connection of over twenty years with Wellington College." A letter of appreciation of his services is to be sent to Mr. Tomlinson.
Sir James Hills, chairman of directors of the Union Steam Ship Company, and a member of the London Board of the Bank of New Zealand, is due in Auckland on 30th December in the new motor liner Baugitata, of the New Zealand Shipping Company. Mr. J. H. C. Baird, New Zealand superintendent of the New Zealand Shipping Company, is also returning to the Dominion after, ten months' absence.
Mr. J. H. A. Laughton, supplies and attendance officer to the Wellington. Education Board, has been appointed grand secretary for the Dominion for the Druids' Lodge, and His resignation was received at to-day's meeting of the board. Eegret was expressed that the board was losing Mr. Laughton's services after thirty-one years, bnt sincere congratulations were offered him on the important appointment he had received.
I He deeply regretted the Prime Minister's ill-health, stated Mr. H. E. Holland, M.P., at Moera last night. He would have been much better pleased if Sir Joseph "Ward had been able to; be in tho by-election fight with th» | gloves off. One hated having to fight a party whose leader was laid aside byj •illness. He equally regretted the death of the late Sir John Findlay, one of New Zealand's best citizens; and also that of the great churchman, the late Bight Bey. Dr. Cleary, who had not only been a great churchman, but a great citizen. They of the Labour movement would always remember liis sympathetic attitude towards Labour during those days of stress and strain in 1912-13.
Keferring to the appointment of the Hon. T. M. .Wilford as High Commissioner in London, Mr. H. E. Holland, jM.P., stated last night at Moera that long before Mr. Wilf ord's appointment, he had declared that he was the best man available for that position in NewZealand to-day. (Applause.) And if Mr. Wilf ord's appointment and the vacancy caused by it in the representation of the Hutt electorate, resulted in the election of Mr. Nash to Parliament, the electors of the Hutt would then have the best available representative. (Applause.)
