COMPENSATION CLAIM
LAND IN WILLIS STREET
The hearing cf evidence was concluded in the Compensation Court yesterday afternoon in the case in- which Sophia Ann Mary Ethel Quinlan claimed £345 compensation from the Wellington City Council for land taken in Willis street, almost opposite the V.M.C.A., for street widening-purposes. On behalf of the City Council, Mr. J. O'Shea (City Solicitor) asked the Court to take into consideration the question of betterment, which, he maintained, would be a large amount in {hat vicinity. The present facilities for traffic were quite unsatisfactory, but when the street was widened by ten feet, a great improvement would bo effected. J£r. O'Shea quoted the price paid in December, 1926, for a section, adjoining the claimant's to show that her frontage was worth £145 a foot, and on that basis the piece taken had a value of £80. That sum had been offered to the claimant, but she had chosen instead to put the City Council to the expense of a Court action. A majority of the Court to-day awarded the claimant £140, inclusive of interest. Mr. Leighton dissented from the award. Each party was ordered to pay its own costs, and the fee of its assessor, twenty guinea?.
