THE GOULD PARTY
GEOLOGICAL EXPEDITION
DISCOVERY IN RANGES
(Deceived 10th December, 8 a.m.)
BAY OF WHALES, Bth Dec. Dr. Gould's geological party in the Queen Maude Range have climbed partway up Mt. Nansen, west of Axel Heiberg Glacier. The leader reports finds of tremendous interest. Gould's messages are as follow:—
6th December: The present camp which is west of Mt. Betty on the Axel Heiberg, is at 85 degrees 2 minutes south and 165 degrees 30 minutes west longitude. O'Brieir, Thorne, and I started for Mt. Betty to-day, but a heavy fog came up, and we had to return. We have established our mountain base here, and with better weather we shall start up the glacier to-morrow with two weeks' supplies, in an attempt to reach the flat-lying rocks that cap Mt. Nansen.
7th December: We came up the west portion of the Axel Heiberg yesterday and camped in a' snowstorm on the north side of Mt. Nansen. The rocks are very difficult to reach, as there are crevasses on all borders of the glacier but we climbed 6500 ft up the flank of Mt. Nansen to-day and found a series of rocks that haa told us a geological story of such amazing interest as to make the whole trip worth the effort. We have only started. We havo been in the clouds most of the time for the last three days, ana it greatly inter-' feres with our work.
