IMPERIAL CULTURE IN CHRISTCHURCH

The ballroom of the Winter Garden mado a pretty setting for the annual conversazione of tho Society for Imperial Culture, which was hold recently, says a Christehuroh exchange. The gay patterned covers of the chairs and settees, the green tables, and the wealth of beautiful flowers, peonies amid prunus foliage, and Oriental poppies against a _ background of coppc-r beech leaves, irises, and pyrethrums, the many lovely frocks worn, all mado a cheerful scene. The joint hostesses were Mrs. Shelley, who wore a pretty dress of almond green crepe satin, with a scarf of green and goid, and Mrs. Claude Sawtell, whose handsome gown was of fine pale grey lace bordered with soft grey fur. Professor Shelley, the president of the society, said the past year had not been very eventful, but steady progress had been made. A musical competition had taken place, and the score of the prizewinner had been performed and published. A series. of interesting lectures had been given on "Revolution and Evolution as they affected the Arts and Sciences." He invited members to suggest subjects for the coming year. Some delightful pictures by members adorned the walls, and an artistic musical programme, also given by members, was a pleasant part of the entertainment. A: dainty supper was served at small tables with pale yellow damask cloths, and decorated with lovely roses in crystal vases.
