NOVEL MASCOTS
Parisiennes lovo mascots more than any other women in the civilised world, says the London "Star." They believe' in them and their beneficent powers as firmly as Americans belicvo in quack medicines. In Paris one may always find -an. enormous selection of ' these porte-bonheurs, each a work of art and i a novelty. Some aro quite cheap, others are very expensive. There is one in the shape of a Buddha in a tiny golden temple. This* also is a perfume burner as well, and works in complicated manner on.the principle of a cigarette lighter. It is about 2in high, and a mammoth among mascots. As a rule, they measure less than an inch. Among tlio minute charms in one jeweller's shop alone, one could have chosen a sandwich man. in gold, his board . of enamel bearing the number 13, a gold box with a golden cat sitting in it, a golden cottage with windows and doors of coloured enamel. The front door opened to disclose a heart in red enamel a gold envelope with a gold letter peeping out, and dozens more designs. Although so tiny, the work of each is exquisite.
