The Minister of Railways (the Hon. W. B. Taverner) will leave for the South on Friday, and will return to Wellington on the following Thursday. The Leader of the Opposition (the Right Hon. J. G. Cbates) arrived iv Wellington from the North yesterday. Mr. H..E. Holland, M.P., leader "of the Labour Party, arrived in Wellington this morning from Westport to take part in the Hutt election campaign. Mr. Alfred Hill, the well-known musician, intends to leave Sydney for Wellington next Friday, and' will stay m Aew Zealand for five or six weeks.' ■He will be accompanied by Mrs. Hill

Harbord) i g to commence his duties at the Borough Council office on Monday next. ° Mr. H. Muller arrived from Sydney this morning by the Ulimaroa. He is taking up the position of New Zealand representative of J. C. Williamson, Ltd The Eev. DC. Bates arrived back in Wellington this morning hv the Ulimaroa from Sydney. Mr. Bates went to England some months ago to attend the Meteorological Conference which was held there. -
.At the opening of his meeting : at Days Bay last night, Mr. W, Nash (the Labour candidate for the Hutt electorate) expressed his sincere sympathy with the relatives of the late Sir John Fmdlay, and hia r eg ret. at-the new of the death of Bishop Cleary the Roman Catholic Bishop in the Auckland area.
One of the most noteworthy pioneers of Masterton, Mr. Kiehard Brown, JP died at his residence in Essex street yesterday, at the age of 81 years. From the days when he saw the infant borough of Masterton constituted,' Mr Brown was engaged in local government service. Born at Woodhalf- Hertfordshire, England, in 1548,.he came to New Zealand in 1874. After.:a shott stay in Wellington, he went to the Wairarapa and made ; his home in Masterton which then consisted of one-street with a few straggling buildings. Mi-' Brown was appointed Town Clerk .of Masterton on the election of.the first Borough Council, in September, 1877 and held that office for 31 years. Mr Brown was also actively associated with" many public bodies and other societies over a-long period of years, being1; an authority on local government and electoral laws. He celebrated his diamond wedding last year, and is survived by a widow, two sons, and two daughter:''
