WORK OF MEAT BOARD
REPLY TO MR. DICKIE
MIS-STATEMENTS ALLEGED
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
TIMARU, 7th December.
Interviewed to-day regarding the statement of Mr, C. D. Dickie, chairman of the Patea Freezing Company, concerning the Meat Board, Mr. J. Trotter, who has been a member of the Electoral Committee of the board since inception, said Mr. Dickie's reported remarks were full of mis-statements. In the first place, the board was certainly not run by Canterbury farmers, for the representation of each island was almost equal. Mr. D. Jones, M.P., who was the Government nominee, was elected chairman, and this gave the South Island one more than the North. "Mr. Dickie evidently is trying the old dodge of North versus South," said Mr. Trotter.
Mr. Dickie had talked about big salaries, but he (Mr. Dickie) had several times tried to got on tho board. The work of the board called for the employment of exports, and they had to be paid good salaries. Mr. Dickie had refrained from stating that tho Meat Board's advertising had put New Zealand moat on the map at Homo, and also all old abuses had been cut out and New Zealand meat went on. the market as it should go. Kef erring to Mr. Dickie's statement regarding the site of the cool stores on the Thames, Mr. Trotter said that since its inception tho board had tried to reduce the cost of storage in London. Its efforts had been laughed at, so it had bought a site. The London Storage Board had then made aa after to reduce storage charges. The offer had been accepted, with the result that storage had been £50,000 cheaper the following year. Mr. Trotter quoted also figures regarding advertising and stated that during tho present year the board had distributed 29,500 streamers, 82,500 show cards, 18,500 large show cards, 70,500 window discs, 5000 ya* discs, and 2,770,000 booklets
