NELSON, 7th December.
Viscount Craigavon has replied to an invitation by the Kelson City Council to visit Nelson, stating that he regret 3 it is impossible to include the city in. his tour.
Professor T. Easterfield and Mr. Bigg, of the Cawthron Institute, are at present on the West Coast, where they are to give demonstrations of. the methods used in bringing into cultivation tho experimental plots on Sergeant's Hill.
The Hon. H. Atmore, the Minister of Education, has ad\'ised that lie has approved a grant towards the establishment of a C type clental clinic at Colhngwood, which will be a sub-basa and worked from Takaka. Yesterday Nelson and Marlborou*h commenced a preliminary ,Hawke Cup match. The play was broken by rain Nelson's innings concluding late this afternoon with a total of 383, 104 of which were made by Newman. U 0.30 p.m.; Marlborough had five wicketa down for 60 runs. As a number of the visiting team find it impossible to stay until Monday, they are abandoning the match to Nelson at the end <JT the day's play. It is an interesting coincidence that the two wicket-keepers are ex-All Black footballers." M. Woods formerly of Canterbury, keeps for Marlborough, and J. Parker was behind the sticks for Nelson.

The telegraph lines between Nelson and Blenheim were down. The rainfall for the 24 hours up to 9 o'clock this morning was 1.04, making the total for tha year 46.30 inches.
