PETONE CLUB
The Petone Rifle Club fired the fourth and final match for the First Short Range series and for other club competitions at lrentham on Saturday, ranges 300 and 600 yards. A gusty rear right wind with changeable light gave the marksmen plenty of scope for their judgment, often to find their shots go astray, as the changes were sudden and varied. There was a strong attendance in all grades; but it appeared impossible to "keep in the bull" and only 6 members, out of 32 who.completed, averaged inners and over. At 300 yards V. Kershaw led with 44 off the gun, E. Ballinger and H. Dickson being next with 43 each, and W. Currie, W. Jackson, and L. Rule with 42 each. At 600 yards the conditions often beat the gun, and "inners" were looked npon as good shots. T. Warburton and W. Currie made 42 each at this range, followed by E. Ballinger, W. M'lver, F. Williams and R. H. Nicholl with 41 each. The aggregates off the gun were far short of the club standard of 89, the highest being W. Currie and E. Ballinger with 84 each, W. M'lver, T. "Warburton, and F. Kershaw with 82 each. The spoon-winners for the day were: A grade, W. M'lver and E. Ballinger; B grade, W. Scambary and L. Wales; C grade, G. R. Bull and E. L. Evans. In the team competition, E. Ballinger's team was top with 320 points (E. Ballinger 84, W. Currie 84, F. Williams 76, G. R. Bull 76), T. Warburton's team 315, H. Diekson's team 307, W. M'lver's team 303, R. H. Nicholl's team 253, W. H. Ballinger's team 271.
