CHURCH AND STATE

FACING A CHANGE

(From "The Post" s" Representative.)

LONDON, ISth October. The Bishop of Durham (Dr. Henslcy Honson), speaking at Nottingham, said that the rejection of the Eevised Prayer Book by the Commons had placed the Bishops in a paradoxical position and strained the relations of the clergy and laity. ..■:..: .: ..

Inevitably the question of Disestablishment had returned to the arena. Personally, he did not think there was a middle course, though the general opinion of churchmen was more favourable. At the moment no party has included Disestablishment in its programme, but he would not advise any optimist to depend too much on that. All the anarchic forces ii* the Church had. an obvious interest in perpetuating the. present situation, and none of us was likely, to be unconscious of the mundane influences which incline us to an unworthy acquiescence. He asked his fellow-countrymen to stir their consciences and prepare themselves for an experience which could not long be postponed, and which, though it might be stern and -unpalatable, might well be ultimately lioth salutary and strengthening.
