STATE OF HIDE MARKET.
Messrs. W.. Weddel and Co. (Australia), 1 ty., Ltd., Melbourne, • reporting on the hide market state that on the local market good 40-50 abattoirs sold at 5d first cost, equivalent to OWd, c.i.f.e., Europe or America. Weddel's state that they cannot get 6%d for them. Fifty pounds and up without substance run from 4d to 5d first cost and are unsaleable overseas. Queensland wet-salted, 50-60 meats are quoted at 1 5 Ad, c.i.f.e., and Weddel's are askin" Gd without result. They are offered 7%d, c.i.f.e., for dry-salted Queensland 35-45 meats, and say.they could make that price tor seconds six weeks ago. -There is a lack oi confidence everywhere, and unless a little more overseas interest is taken we would not bo surprised to .sco values on this market drop still further.'' the report continues. "As regards New' Zealauds we are afraid it is going to bo extremely difficult to create an interest i;i local circles at inmost any price. Stout hides are in demand, bufc- the very small proportion of stouts in ally run of New Zcalands, and the preponderance of mediums.and sheeties detracts at present from their value in the market."
