BATHING FATALITY
MAN DROWNED AT DAY'S BAY
The fairly heavy surf running at Day's Bay during the week-end was responsible for one bather losing his life and others getting into difficulties. The victim was James Watson, aged 24, aud it is believed that he arrived in ISJew Zealand from Ireland about three years ngo nnder the Salvation Army's immigration scheme.
Watson was bathing with a friend, Dennis Guilfoyle, when he got into difficulties. Guilfoyle attempted to bring him in, but becoming exhausted came ashoro alone for help. Watson's plight was then seen by Mr. J. Clementson, who with Guilfoylo's assistance managed to bring him to land. Artificial respiration was applied, but without avail, and when Dr. Skaud arrived he could only pronounce life extinct. Guilfoyle himself was in a serious position at one time, but he recovered wheu he got ashore.
Yesterday afternoon a man and a woman also got into trouble in deep water, but assistance from other bathers was quickly forthcoming, and they were brought to the shore, where they soon recovered.
