RESCUING STEAMER

SUPERB SEAMANSHIP

TRIBUTES FROM SURVIVORS

British Official Wireless.

(Received 7th December, 11 a.m.)

BTJGBY, Gth December. The wreck of the Prances Duncan was witnessed by people on shore, who were helpless to- save her. A huge sea suddenly swept over her, and whou she emerged she was on her beam ends. The launch of her boats was impossible. She remained in this position half an hour, when she rolled over and I sank. The Newcastle steamer Adele Marie caught sight of her before -she [disappeared, and later picked up five I survivors. The survivors were brought into Brixham, Devon, by the Adelo Marie. Although injured and exhausted, they were anxious to make- known the gallantry of Captain Blayloek and the crew of tho Adele Marie, and the superb seamanship with which she was handled. They stated that while he manoeuvred to get near the capsized steamer the Adele Marie was not only continuously in grave danger from mountainous seas, which swept over her, but had to get perilously near to the Loiigships Eocks. The Adele Marie had to make many attempts before she could get a line to the five men clinging to the keel of the wreck, and immediately they had been taken off the wreck sank. The survivors included the captain, who is unable to swim.
