BED CROSS ACTIVITIES

The monthly meeting ■of the Wellington Peacetime Division of the New Zealand .branch of the British Red Cross Society was held yesterday, ~ Mr. C. H. Chapman, M.P., presiding. It was. .reported, that the accommodation, for.the. junior Eed. Cross division was now in;orders the .rent; being £40 per annum. Good response.had been received to the call for "donations towards the Victoria Hospital radio fund and a sum of £97 14s was in hand. The result of the Rose Day appeal on behalf of the R.S.A. had been very gratifying, and the ladies ■ concerned. deserved special thanks for-their efforts. The Prisoners' Aid Society advised that it was not thought desirable that it should be represented on the Red Cross committee as it- wished to do its work with as little publicity as possible. The secretary (Mr. M. S Gallpwajsr)..stated that he had submitted an application to share in the Shokeri fund, a bequest in aid of the international' Red Cross societies. The Ladies' Hospital Auxiliary Committee advised that it wished to take over the library at the Victoria Ward as it came within the scope of its work. A grant of £1 was made towards the citizens' peace demonstration' oh Armistice Day. The Rotary Club wrote that it would nominate delegates to the Red Cross Peacetime Committee. The Mqera' Ratepayers' League advised that, while appreciating the work done by the Red Cross, it could-not see its way to.repeat the donation of £10 given last year, but at the end of the current financial year an endeavour would be made to make some recognition of the society's work. The Hospital cafeteria committee advised that the cafeteria would be closed for four weeks from 20th December. A picnic for the civilian' blind will, be held on Wednesday next, and the Rotary Club has arranged for fifteen motor-cars to be at the service of the society. Arrangements were reported to be well in hand-for the garden fete at the Hospital on 22nd February iThe treasurer's report showed a credit balance of £765 Sai S.d.
