Dr. Benham, Curator of the Otago University Museum, writes: "As custodian of -the Hoeken collection given to this museum some twenty years ago, I wish to .assure the public "that the Maori curios purchased at a sale in London and stated in a Press cablegram to have.'originally belonged to the Hoeken collection,' never formed part of the gift to this' museum. Dr. Hoeken's gift is intact; none of it has been removed from this museum, though his specimens are now incorporated with the much more extensive series of Maori objects now on exhibition here." The cablegram ,in question reads:— "Mr. Moss -Davis, of Auckland, purchased at a sale by auction Maori curios which originally belonged to the Hoeken collection. They included a tomahawk, a fish spear, a largo bone tiki, and rare neck ornaments. They are, being sent .to the. Auckland Museum. " ■ '- ■■■■'-...
