CONTROLLING TRAFFIC
SUGGESTED "ISLAND"
A proposal to erect an island refuge at the intersection of Taranaki and Wakefieia streets gave rise to some discussion at last night's meeting of the City Council. The Mayor (Mr. G. A. Troup) suggested that the- question should be left over until they had legislative authority to erect such
refuges.
The City Solicitor (Mr. J. O'Shea) foresaw difficulties^ the way of erecting the refuge, as it would be a very difficult matter to satisfactorily lig.ht it, as it. would only be a few inches above the ground. It was for the City Council to decide, but he was pointing out the possible dangers, especially in such a litigious city as Wellington. (Laughter.1) Councillor T. Forsyth did not see the need for such a refuge, as there was little danger to pedestrian traffic at that particular point. Councillor R. Seinple agreed that they should have the law on their side before they went any further in the matter, in order the the council might be protected against litigation. Councillor G. Mitchell raised the general question of car-parking in the streets, and referred particularly to those people who parked their cars in the street from early morning until night. It was against the law, but was done every day. They could not afford to allow the position to got any worse than it was to-day. Councillor M. F. Luckie saia the idea of the island refuge was to form the traffic, both pedestrian and vehicular, into lanes. It was proposed to erect a small lighthouse so as to mako the island plainly visible at night. If they waited for authority it would mean a delay of over twelve months.
On the motion of the Mayor the proposal was referred back to the Bylaws Committee.
