"LOOSE STATEMENTS"

ONUS NOW ON MR. KERR

That the United Party candidate, Mr. Kerr, seems to be falling into makmg loose statements was tho view expressed by Mr. H. F. Johnston, the Reform candidate, when speaking at Moera. Mr. Johnston referred to the repudiation made by tho .JMinisier of Lands (tho Hon. G. W. Forbes) and Mr. P. Fraser, M.P., of tho assertion made by Mr. Kerr. "I accept, of course, as anyone would do, the statements of Mr. Forbes and Mr. Eraser on that subject," said Mr. Johnston, "and it is for Mr. Kerr to tell us now with whom the motion was pre-ai-ranged." At question time, Mr. Johnston was asked why, if Mr. Coates really wanted, to help the Civil servants in respect to salaries, he had not moved an amendment himself.

Mr. Johnston: "Because it was impossible to get it. through." Tho candidate added, in reply to.'further questions as to what he thought of that necessity for the "cuts," that they were a real sacrifice made by tho Civil servants when thu country was short of money.

A voice: "Well, I think you ought to strike a medal for them now."

"I think so," Mr. Johnston agreed, "They deserve it."
