UNDER APENNINES

GREAT RAILWAY TUNNEL

WOEK OF BOEING COMPLETED

(Received 6th December, 2 p.m.)

ROME, sth December. The boring of the longest doubletrack tunnel in the world was completed to-day. It penetrates the Apennines between Bologna and Florence, and cost five millions, largely owing to the extraordinary hardness of the rock. Sixty-nine lives were lost in the process of the work, which reduces the journey from two and a half hours to an hour. The total cost of the railway is nine millions sterling.
