PROGRESS IN PARILAMENT
LONDON, 4th December.
In the House of Lords the Widows, Orphans, and Old Ago Pensions Bill was read a third time.
In the House of Commons, Miss Bondfield (Minister of Labour).in Committee on tko Unemployed Insurance Bill, said that she regretted that she could not accept an amendmend to pay wives of unemployed 10s instead of 9s per week. It would cost £823,000. Mr. Wheatley (Labour) said that he believed Miss Bondfield was personally, opposed to the amendment. He felt inclined to regret the day when women, entered public life. .
Miss Bondfield moved the closure, which was carried by 293 votes to 168. The amendment was defeated by 229, votes to 28. Mr. Baldwin and 50 Conservatives and 20 Liberals did not vote.
Miss Jennio Lee (Labour) moved aa increase inthe allowance for the children of unemployed from 2s to ss, which' would cost four and a half millions and affect 600,000 children. This was defeated by 210 votes to 37. Many; Liberals and Conservatives and dozens of Labour members abstained from the •division.
